Siblings Day is a day of recognition for your brothers and your sisters and falls on this Sunday, April 10th. Even if you don’t have biological brothers or sisters, I’m sure there are people in your life that you consider family. If so, include them into this day of recognition as well.
One of the greatest things you can do for a sibling is to help them increase their awareness and safety. Maybe by teaching them some street smarts and safety practices you may one day, save them from danger. Here are 4 ways to pass on street smarts to your siblings:
- Check out their digs
Do you have siblings living on their own, maybe on a college campus or in an apartment? There are so many safety tips you can share with them by checking out their home first. Are the entrances well lit? If not, perhaps the building manager needs a reminder. Is the neighborhood dangerous? Perhaps you can both look up the crime stats online to get a good sense of the crime happening in the area.
- How do they get around?
What forms of transportation do they use? If it’s a bus, train or subway, it’s really important to make sure they do not use headphones or earbuds while waiting or riding public transportation. Keeping aware with all of your senses is so important while in public these days, even more so lately with the threat of terrorism hitting home. If any kind of large danger were to strike a public place you want to be on high alert, not the last to realize what is happening and a step behind every one else.
- Are they dating safely?
Or are they in a healthy relationship, free of violence or emotional abuse? This can be a very delicate conversation to have with your sibling but you can start with a quick check-in. See if they are using dating apps and practicing safety when meeting strangers for the first time.
- Invest in your siblings' safety
Would your sibling know how to defend themselves if they did find themselves face to face with a predator? If not, perhaps you can both take a self-defense class together. Another great way to enhance awareness and personal safety is to carry a SABRE pepper spray. The act of carrying it alone, keeps your mind on safety and for just $19.99 you can buy one get one for yourself too!

By having a safety conversation with your sibling, it really shows that you care about them. Because let’s face it, without safety, we could be putting ourselves and our loved ones in vulnerable situations that may otherwise be avoided by having a plan. So, check in with your sibling today!
