National Running Safety Month occurs during November, one of the prettiest times of the year to run outdoors. So, if your training takes you on some scenic trails this month, keep the following safety tips in mind:
- Check in with someone you trust
Tell a friend or neighbor where you'll be running, and when they should expect you back. This way, if you're gone for longer than expected, they'll know and be able to take the appropriate next steps.
- Run with a friend
There's safety in numbers! In addition to reducing the risk someone will see you as a soft target, running with a friend means you'll have more heads to put together if you get lost - which leads us to our next tip...
- Bring a map and your phone
If you get lost while you're trail running, there's a danger that it might take you a long time to find your way again. Your map and cell will help you get back on the grid as quickly as possible.
- Bring a personal alarm and pepper spray
A personal alarm is a highly versatile personal safety tool. It can help you call for help not only if you're attacked, but also if you become injured. Runner pepper spray fits in the palm of your hand, for police-grade protection at your fingertips! Choose from pink or black.

- Wear bright clothing
Doing so will help hunters see you from afar.
