It seems like these days that there is a national day for just about anything. Sunday, July 24, is National Cousins Day and unlike National Donut Day, this day is very significant. Growing up with cousins is the next best thing to having siblings. If you grew up without siblings then having cousins can be just as awesome.
I was lucky enough to have 32 first cousins on my mother’s side of the family! Holidays were filled with people, love and lots of food. I learned so much from the older cousins and got to really bond with the cousins closer to my age. So, today, I would like to encourage all of us to recognize our cousins with these 6 ways to appreciate your cousins:
- Send a card for no reason
The art of handwriting a card and sending via snail mail is close to extinction. Yet, it feels so good to receive a handwritten card or letter. Take the time and effort to express to your cousin how important they are in your life.
- Make a photo collage for you and your cousins
Dig through old pictures to find those gems. Find those pictures that captured the essence of being a kid and playing with your cousins. Scan them (if they are not digital) and upload them all to Collage.com where you can easily make a digital collage and print enough copies for your special cousins. Because nobody prints photos anymore!
- Initiate a group Skype session
In many families, as cousins get older the family starts to spread out around the country. Family gatherings get happen less often and become more expensive as people move further away. Skype or Google Hangouts are great, free ways to connect with each other. Schedule a time as if it were a business meeting, where everyone can virtually meet and catch up. Everyone can have their own snacks or even cocktails while they connect online from the comfort of their own living room.
- Be the family safety czar
If you care about your cousins, then you must truly care about their well-being and their safety. Especially in these crazy times we are living in. Give your cousins safety tips that you actually use in your everyday life. Perhaps that is being more aware when you are out and about. You keep your cellphone in your purse or pocket and don’t read it or talk on it when you are on the street. Or maybe it’s that you don’t wear your headphones while in public. Enhancing people’s safety habits can be one of the best gifts you can give.
- Or you can actually buy them a gift to help enhance their safety
The SABRE Key Case Pepper Spray with Quick Release Key Ring Combo Pack offers you two pepper sprays to give away to your cousins. Or if you only have one cousin, keep the other for yourself! Just by owning a pepper spray and carrying it with you can make you more aware and alert than the average person, who’s not thinking of their own safety.
- Trace your roots together
Sign up for an Ancestry.com account and build your family tree together. Bonding with your cousins over a shared family tree can bring you closer than you know. If you want to take it a step further, buy a DNA testing kit and really go way back in your history to see where your ancestors come from.
I was always taught that family comes first and that there is nothing more important. So I wish you all a happy National Cousins Day and remember to acknowledge the cousins in your life.
