Home alarms shut down two burglary attempts in central New Jersey, as reported by police according to a www.centraljersey.com article. At the sound of the burglar alarms, each of the would-be burglars fled.
These two bungled break-in attempts are no surprise, especially in light of a recent UNC Charlotte Department of Criminal Justice & Criminology report.
The report listed home alarms among of the potential target hardening deterrents alongside outdoor cameras and other surveillance equipment. Over half (60%) of burglars "indicated that the presence of an alarm would cause them to seek an alternative target altogether."
Over 80% of U.S. homes aren't protected with a security system or any alarms. And, according to the FBI, property crime is on the rise, costing Americans over $15 billion a year.
